Elementary School: Grades 1-5
THE PLACE WHERE STUDENTS FIND THEIR PATH FORWARD
As children grow and develop, so too does their curriculum. Elementary education at Seacoast Waldorf School begins with first grade, where a child’s emotional life and imagination are prized. They take steps toward more academic instruction, presented in concert with artistic work, drama, movement, music, and crafts.
Seacoast elementary students learn academic subjects in weeks-long blocks, including language arts, mythology, history, geography, geology, algebra, geometry, biology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, and more. “Main lesson,” the first academic focus of the day, goes deep into a particular subject for an extended time, and students fill main lesson books with writing and art about what they learn. These main lesson books become treasured keepsakes that mark the milestones of their education.
Seacoast Waldorf School strives for academic excellence through artistic integration, multi-day experiential trips, creative, hands-on learning, and an introduction to critical thinking. We encourage cooperation over competition and seek to engage students in the joy of learning.
Elementary-age students experience special subject classes to enrich and support their academic learning, including music, art, handwork, woodwork, and physical education.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Waldorf education teaches subjects in focused blocks, called main lessons, where students spend three to four weeks going deep into one subject rather than switching between short periods all day. At Seacoast Waldorf School, the same teacher stays with a class across multiple years, building the kind of relationship that lets a teacher truly know how each child learns, not just what grade they're in.
-
Yes. The main-lesson approach means students go deeper into fewer subjects at a time rather than skimming many. Elementary students at Seacoast Waldorf keep hand-illustrated lesson books that serve as their own textbooks, built entirely from their own work, a level of engagement with material that a workbook page doesn't require.
-
The day opens with a morning circle involving movement, verse, and music, moves into the main lesson block, and includes daily outdoor time, handwork, and often a foreign language or music period. The rhythm repeats daily and seasonally, which gives young children a predictable structure to move through.

Yes, Seacoast Waldorf uses a looping model where one teacher stays with a class for multiple years rather than handing students to a new teacher every September. For elementary-age children, that continuity means less time spent re-establishing trust each fall and more time spent actually learning.

The habits built in elementary, sustained focus through main lesson blocks, ownership of a lesson book, and comfort working with the same teacher over time, carry directly into the increased independence and project-based work of middle school.
