A Nature-Rich Preschool Experience for Portsmouth Families

Looking for a private preschool near Portsmouth, New Hampshire? Seacoast Waldorf School offers a warm, nurturing early childhood experience for families looking for a different approach to preschool education.

Located just across the Piscataqua River in Eliot, Maine, Seacoast Waldorf School is a private Waldorf school serving families from Portsmouth, Dover, Kittery, York, South Berwick, and communities throughout the Seacoast.

Our early childhood program gives young children time and space to play, explore, create, move, and develop a strong foundation for their first school experience.

A Preschool Where Childhood Isn't Rushed

At Seacoast Waldorf School, we believe early childhood is a precious and foundational stage of life—not something to rush through.

Our early childhood classrooms are warm, beautiful, and intentionally designed to support young children's natural development. A consistent daily rhythm provides security and predictability, while imaginative play, storytelling, practical activities, movement, and outdoor exploration give children meaningful ways to learn through experience.

Children are encouraged to discover the world through their senses, their bodies, their imaginations, and their relationships with others.

Nature Is Part of the School Day

For Portsmouth families looking for a nature-based preschool, Seacoast Waldorf offers an environment where children spend meaningful time outdoors as part of their everyday experience.

Our five-acre campus borders hundreds of acres of conservation land. Children have opportunities to explore the natural world in all seasons, observe changes in the landscape, move their bodies, and develop a lasting sense of connection with nature.

At Seacoast Waldorf, outdoor time isn't simply an occasional activity or field trip. Nature is part of the way children learn.

Waldorf Preschool for Young Children

Seacoast Waldorf's Nursery program serves children beginning at 2½ years old through age 4. Families can choose from 3-, 4-, or 5-day programs, with half-day and full-day options.

Mornings run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, while full-day programs run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with Extended Day Care available until 5:30 p.m. Children do not need to be toilet trained to attend Nursery.

Our early childhood program emphasizes:

  • Imaginative, child-led play

  • Storytelling, songs, and movement

  • Outdoor exploration

  • Practical activities and hands-on experiences

  • Natural classroom materials

  • Creative expression

  • Developing independence and confidence

  • A consistent daily rhythm

  • Warm, responsive relationships with teachers

  • Time and space for children to simply be children

A Gentle First Step Into School

A child's first experience with school can shape how they feel about learning for years to come.

Our teachers guide children into the school experience with patience, warmth, and respect for each child's individual development. The rhythm of the day helps children feel secure while giving them plenty of opportunities for discovery and play.

Children learn through everyday experiences such as preparing and sharing food, creating art, listening to stories, singing, caring for their classroom, playing outdoors, and spending time with friends.

These simple experiences help children develop confidence, independence, social skills, coordination, and a growing sense of responsibility.
