Tutoring and Individual Needs

Seacoast Waldorf School teachers make every effort to meet children’s specific needs within a classroom situation. The curriculum addresses the child’s developmental stages and works in multi-sensory approaches to encompass various learning styles. This method is supportive and is often considered therapeutic. Nevertheless, some children have needs that require special consideration.

Seacoast Waldorf School welcomes applicants for admission with a diagnosed learning disability and/or a current IEP or 504. Qualified students will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In order to meet the student's needs, within the range of the school's limited resources, it is required that previous assessments and evaluations of the student be shared. The teachers will determine whether the student’s needs can be fully met in the classroom.

In determining what learners we can serve, we recognize our capabilities and limitations. A collaborative approach is taken in assisting teachers and parents in determining what type of support may be needed.  While teachers may provide extra help on a short-term basis, there may be reason for additional support through outside services. The outside support cost will be borne by the parents. We wish to meet each student’s needs with integrity.  While we strive for open lines of communication, the final decision rests with the school.

If the class teacher and parents agree that a special education evaluation is appropriate the following steps will be taken:

  • School may request an evaluation from the public school's special education program

  • Parents may choose to have such an evaluation performed by a private practitioner at their own expense.

  • If a special education program is deemed appropriate, the school will work with the public school system to devise and implement a program.

  • School may request communication with any additional outside practitioners to benefit the student.

  • In the event that a student is diagnosed after admittance, special services will not be available until an assessment is made for the following year.

Educational Support

The Educational Support Coordinator at Seacoast Waldorf School will work with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop an Individualized Support Plan (ISP).  An ISP, similar to an IEP, provides students with reasonable accommodations and modifications to the classroom and academic work so that the child can learn more effectively.

The Seacoast Waldorf School’s Educational Support Consultant can provide further information regarding the evaluation process and timelines.

Seacoast Waldorf School does not receive Federal funding for educational support.

Seacoast Waldorf School is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment where families, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds of cultures, economic classes, races,  genders, sexual orientations, religions and creeds, nationalities and ethnic origins feel welcome. We continually seek to improve the ways we serve and support all members of the community.

“A healthy social life is found When, in the mirror of each human soul, The whole community is living, And when, in the community, each human soul finds its reflection.”

Dr. Rudolf Steiner Founder of the Waldorf school movement
